One day I had the inspiration to propose a mosaic course dedicated to making masks, an idea that immediately fascinated me. To better deal with the technique and convey the magic of this art to the participants, I created a prototype that completely captivated me, transporting me into a world of creativity and profound meaning.
During my journey in preparing this work, I explored the symbolism of masks through the traditions of different peoples. One definition, in particular, struck me deeply: “…masks mark the critical moments, the transition phases, the intermediate and marginal zones of social life, the more or less defined boundaries between a domain of reality and the other. They are used in rites of passage, in representations of the origins of the world and in moments of transformation that mark the passage from the human world to a non-human ‘elsewhere’.”
This reflection guided me in creating a mask that is not just a decorative object, but a bridge between the visible and the invisible, between our world and the one that goes beyond. Each piece of the mosaic, with its shape and color, tells a story, a passage, a change. The mosaic mask thus becomes a symbol of transformation, a vehicle of energy that crosses time and space, inviting those who observe it to reflect on the mystery and sacredness of transition moments in life.
The mosaic was created using a direct technique on hand-carved polystyrene.
Materials: Lamp made on a metal mesh base and two-component neutral blend with inserts of Venetian white gold on a yellow on a background (24K gold leaf).
